Ooh yes, we’ve just got our dirty paws on the latest version of Trek’s big travel, full suspension e-MTB, the Rail! Essentially an electrified version of the Slash, the Trek Rail is equipped with a 160mm travel fork, 150mm rear travel, 29in wheels and aggressive wide tyres. With an eye on big mountain terrain, the Rail’s frame is engineered around the latest 4th generation Bosch Performance CX motor and a big 625Wh battery that stows inside the travelled over to the launch of the Rail last year, and you can check out his detailed first look story here for all the ins and outs of this premium long travel electric mountain bike. While Mick was thoroughly impressed with the Rail’s handling and suspension performance, there were still a few areas for improvement. Trek appears to have been listening, because while the chassis carries over for 2021, the Rail has been updated with several key upgrades that are designed to strengthen this bike’s stance amongst an increasingly competitive field. Here we’ll be taking a closer look at our newest test bike, the 2021 Trek Rail 9, to see exactly what’s changed, and why we’re excited to put this e-MTB to the test on home an electrified version of the Slash, the Trek Rail is equipped with a 160mm travel fork, 150mm rear travel, 29in wheels and chubby wide ZEB!That’s right, the RockShox Lyrik has disappeared from the front of the Rail 9, and in its place is the all-new ZEB, an absolute monster of a fork. Featuring bigger 38mm diameter upper tubes, the ZEB is chunkier than the Lyrik and is designed for big travel enduro bikes, e-MTBs and bikepark-style ZEB can be had with 160-190mm of travel. Here in it’s in its shortest travel guise, it gives the Rail a very robust-looking front end. Inside you’ll find the new DebonAir C1 air spring along with the ultra-tuneable Charger RC damper, which offers adjustable compression and rebound damping. We’ve already tested the ZEB separately and it’s a brilliant fork that is a welcome addition to the Trek Rail – check out our review of the 2021 RockShox ZEB 2021 Trek Rail upgrades to the new RockShox ZEB fork and a custom Super Deluxe Ultimate shock, which places a bigger emphasis on grip and high-speed damping control over pedal efficiency. All good things for a big travel the adjusters are different, but it’s on the inside where the custom Super Deluxe Ultimate cooks up a little extra magic Sensitive And Custom Super DeluxeAnother big suspension upgrade for the 2021 Trek Rail is the rear shock. It’s a custom shock built by RockShox and designed in collaboration with Jose Gonzalez – the man at the helm of Trek’s Suspension R&D lab in California. This custom Super Deluxe Ultimate shock was first announced a few weeks ago on the brand new 2021 Trek Slash, and Trek has brought it over to the Rail for the shock might not look all that different, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. It still uses the Thru-Shaft damper architecture, but unlike the shock used on the 2020 Trek Rail, there’s no more REaktiv valve. Instead, Trek has implemented a standard shim stack, with the goal of prioritising glue-like traction and warp-speed descending control over outright pedal efficiency. That makes total sense for a pedal assisted e-MTB, and in our experience with the new Slash, it’s a seriously impressive shock that should bring greater suppleness and reactivity to the back end of the 2021 Trek Rail makes use of the Bosch software update, giving the motor an extra 10Nm of torque and more responsive performance in the eMTB Powaaah! The Rail still features the latest Bosch Performance CX Gen 4 engine, though this motor has recently had a significant software update to provide more power and a more natural delivery of that power. There’s now 85Nm of torque up from 75Nm, and it features an Extended Boost function, so that the motor continues to drive a little longer after you stop pedalling on a tricky technical climb. The eMTB mode has also been refined to be more sensitive to the rider’s inputs, particularly in lower gears, and power delivery is more accessible across a wider cadence range than newly refined Gen 4 motor comes standard on the 2021 Trek Rail, but it’s worth noting that for those with the 2020 version, you can achieve those same refinements with a simple software upgrade – get in touch with your local Trek dealer to inquire about the Out, Kiox InAlso nice to see is the switch from Bosch’s functional but ageing Purion display to the much more futuristic Kiox display. The head unit sits on the Rail’s top tube just behind the stem, where it’s better protected in the event of a crash. The head unit attaches to its cradle via the sorcery of magnets, while a simple control switch near the left-hand brake lever allows you to change assist modes and scroll through menu options without having to take your hand off the display features a sweet colour screen and access to a wider range of metrics on-the-fly, including remaining range, live power output, cadence and riding speed, and it’ll pair via Bluetooth your smartphone to update ride remote offers you fingertip control of the assist mode, while the display unit is protected on the top tube behind the Models Will There Be In Oz?For 2021, Trek Australia will have three different models in the Rail lineup, with prices starting at $8,999 AUD for the Rail 7 and going up to $11,799 AUD for the Rail entry-level option is the Rail 7. This bike features an Alpha Platinum Alloy chassis, the Bosch Performance CX motor and 625Wh battery, and for 2021 it moves over to a Shimano SLX 1×12 drivetrain with 4-piston brakes. Suspension is handled by a RockShox Yari RC fork and a standard in-line Deluxe shock the Rail 7 doesn’t get the new custom Super Deluxe Ultimate piggyback shock, and it also relies on the older Purion Goldilocks bike is what we have here – the Rail 9. It gets the same chassis, motor and battery as the Rail 7, but upgrades to the new ZEB fork and custom Super Deluxe Ultimate rear shock. As mentioned above, it also gets the new Kiox display, along with chunky Bontrager SE5 tyres, powerful 4-piston SRAM Code brakes, and a GX Eagle drivetrain with the new derailleur and 10-52T finally there’s the top-end Rail XT model. This is the only Rail model in Australia to feature an OCLV carbon fibre chassis, though the spec is otherwise very similar to the Rail 9 – the fork, shock, wheels, tyres and cockpit are identical. You do get carbon bars though, as well as a Shimano XT 1×12 drivetrain and SLX brakes. Trek claims it’s over lighter as a result, but you’ll be paying a $1,300 premium for that Rail 9 sits in the middle of the lineup, featuring a tough alloy chassis, Bontrager finishing kit, SRAM Code brakes and the new GX Eagle 1×12 drivetrain – complete with that gargantuan 10-52T the frame design and geometry carry over from 2020, key updates to the Rail 9’s suspension and Bosch system promise a different experience on the trail. Stay tuned for more from our newest long-term test Trek Rail 9 On TestOver the coming summer season, we’ll be putting our Trek Rail 9 to the test to see exactly how the new changes play out on the trail. Bike was impressive with a "monoshock" headtube contained unit that rpovided 35 mm of travel and took the sting off small bumps. 4 How does one review a bike and not list the weight? Inquiring minds want to know. 5 IMO The advertising for e-bikes is very bad and portrays a very negative message. Are they advertising to 12 year olds? Dean 7 45 + or - 5 pounds encompasses most of the ones that I've tried; 10 or so pound motor, 5 or so pound battery adds up. They'll get "carbonized" and maybe a hardtail could get down to 35 or so in the future. 8 Most E Bikes weigh in around 40 to 50 lbs from what I've seen. Lightest one I've read about weighed 35lbs and that was full carbon with an uber price tag. 9 Yes, the weight is always strangely left out of the specs In one review the guy said to the effect the assist means you don't need to obsess over every gram. What? Here is a fun promo of the Cube, another bike like the powerlly My Haibike allmtn plus is ten days from my door, they are telling me. Just arrived in the country Here's what it looks like It's just under 51 Lbs. The thing is, they do not feel heavy when you ride them......normally Certainly for a fast DH rider they will feel very different. The flick factor is 25lbs short, but these mid drives are super stable weight is very low centered. 10 Anyone else think €4500 is a bit expensive for what you get?

TheTrek Powerfly 7 FS is a good electric mountain bike, but its component specification is holding it back from reaching its potential. Price: $5,200 List Pros: Good distance range, strong power output, good e-bike controls. Cons: Poor component specification, poor downhill performance. Manufacturer: Trek. Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped Bosch Performance Line CX/625 Wh 120/100 mm f/r kg in size L € 6,999 manfacturer website That eBike is part of our big trekking eBike group test. There you can find an overview of the test fleet and all information on the latest generation of trekking eBikes. Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped in review – Is this what the next generation of trekking bikes feels like? It’s all a matter of balance with the Powerfly FS 9, Trek have made it their mission to blur the boundaries between bike categories and combine the best of the eMTB and E-trekking bike worlds. Instead of prioritising particular riding characteristics, Trek’s full-suspension ebike was developed to blend supposed opposites and create a balanced and harmonious riding experience, both on- and off-road. To find out whether the concept actually works, we tested the flagship Powerfly FS 9 Equipped, which weighs kg and retails for € 6,999. The upright pedalling position allows you to concentrate on the trail ahead and is pleasantly balanced, distributing the weight evenly between the hands and saddle – the perfect prerequisites for a great tourer! At the same time, the balanced weight distribution ensures good control over the front wheel and generates lots of traction at the rear. The Bosch Performance Line CX motor delivers plenty of power in all situations and is easy to modulate thanks to the progressive eMTB mode. Moreover, the Trek has a second progressive mode called eMTB-Lite, which is optimised to provide increased range. The intuitive handling makes it easy to lean the bike into wide corners and take advantage of the wide handlebars to dodge potholes and obstacles with quick and controlled turns. Although it’s not as playful as a trail bike, the Powerfly is great fun and easy to control on easy trails, getting you to your destination quickly and safely even when the route includes unpaved trail sections on challenging terrain. Messy frontWhile the cockpit area is one big cable chaos, the rest of the frame looks clean and tidy. Shimano XT four-piston brakes with 200 mm rotors provide powerful and reliable deceleration. Even on long descents with a full pannier on the rack, they deliver consistent braking power and good modulation. While at 108 kg the Trek has a relatively low maximum payload, even with a 10 kg pannier on the rack it’s good natured and easy to manoeuvre, feeling significantly more composed than other bikes with a higher maximum payload ratings – the Kalkhoff Entice 5 Advanced+. The pannier rack features a practical MIK rail, which makes it easy to attach compatible bags and is approved for a 25 kg load. The Supernova MINI 2 headlight and E3 tail light look great and are powerful enough for night riding. Unfortunately, other accessories don’t live up to the otherwise high-quality spec of the Powerfly. The plastic mudguards are too short and can’t prevent mud from flying onto the person riding behind you and the kickstand makes a loud rattling Helmet MET Roam Jacket Zimtstern Timbaz Shirt Rapha PureFlowz Shorts GORE C5 Shoes Specialized Rime Flat Pannier RFR Tourer 20 Tuning tip Bosch Help Connect plan with fall detection for solo adventurers Stiff – Riding comfort onboard the Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped The suspension of the Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped consists of a SR Suntour Zeron 35 fork and semi-integrated RockShox SID Lux Select+ shock, controlling 120 and 100 mm travel respectively. Although the numbers suggest a high level of comfort, the suspension is tuned for maximum efficiency which translates into a stiff and sporty rear end. On smooth tarmac, this converts each pedal stroke into efficient propulsion, without the rear end bobbing. Small bumps and vibrations are mostly dealt with by the high-volume tires while the suspension takes care of bigger hits, working actively and efficiently. As a result, the Trek is less comfortable than the Riese & MĂŒller Homage but, in return, doesn’t feel as sluggish. The low-slung top tube and 150 mm Bontrager Line dropper post make it easy to get on and off the bike. Propulsion first! The sporty suspension is tuned uncompromisingly for efficiency and riding fun, not for comfort.” A smartphone as an on-board computer – The connectivity of the Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped in detail One of the most striking equipment features of the Trek is the versatile Bosch SmartphoneHub. For short rides, this can be used without a smartphone. The basic display shows all key data such as battery charge and speed. If you want other functions like navigation or fitness tracking, you can connect your phone to the SmartphoneHub via the app and Bluetooth. While riding, the smartphone is firmly attached to a spring clip on the SmartphoneHub, where it can be operated via remote and charged via the hub itself. The app offers a wide range of functions including voice navigation. If you tend to ride a lot on your own, you should take a closer look at Bosch’s Help Connect function € or € with fall detection mode. This can notify your local emergency services in the event of a crash and is currently available in 11 European countries. Quick off-road blast or long weekend ride? The Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped doesn’t say no to either!“ A matter of balanceThe Trek Powerfly FS 9 blends sporty handling, efficient propulsion and long-distance comfort into a harmonious overall concept. The result pure riding fun! This is what the future of trekking looks like – The Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped in detail Even whilst stationary, the Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped cuts a damn fine figure. Particularly striking are the sporty silhouette with its low-slung top tube and the elegant finish with its dark accents. Unfortunately, the chaotic cable management in the cockpit area spoils the otherwise tidy look. The Bosch Performance Line CX motor is neatly integrated into the frame and protected by a skid plate, while the 625 Wh battery is integrated into the down tube and can be easily removed to the side. The battery cover features Trek’s trademark carrying- handle while the battery cover and charge-port cover on the seat tube are both painted to match the colour of the frame. The charge port cover is easy to open and closes automatically – awesome! Not only the frame but also components like the handlebars, dropper post and BontragerLine Comp 30 wheelset, which Trek also use on their other performance-oriented eMTBs, make a great impression. In the smaller XS and S sizes, the Trek Powerfly comes with smaller wheels while all other sizes roll on big 29” wheels. Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped conclusion The Trek Powerfly FS 9 is exceptionally versatile and covers a wide range of applications, giving the concept of trekking a whole new meaning. The finely-tuned suspension and balanced pedalling position ensure sporty yet predictable handling and top riding fun while inspiring huge amounts of confidence on long off-road expeditions. The everyday equipment makes daily commutes and weekend trips more comfortable. The elegant look rounds off the successful concept of the Trek Powerfly FS 9, which comes out on top in our E-trekking bike group test, securing the coveted Best in Test. TREK2021 Powerfly FS Motor Armor Black ÂŁ17.48 Beefed up the parts to deal with the beatings that e-bikes get Up hill or down, ebikes take an absolute beating, so the new Trek Powerfly 9 has a beefed up the parts package to handle the additional abuse. >>> The best electric mountain bikes Trek Powerfly 9 LT need to know Integrated side-loading battery pack offers a sleek functional design Trek’s ABP suspension pumps put 150mm travel, coupled with a 160mm Fox 36 fork Bosch Performance CX motor and 500Wh battery packs on all models Two new carbon version shares the same geometry and sizing as the alloy Powerfly LTs Forget torque, watts and even mismatched wheel sizes
integration is the real buzzword in ebike tech right now. And unless you go it alone with a custom motor like Rocky Mountain, something very few brands are prepared to risk, integration is currently about concealing the power-source. 150mm travel offers adequate cushioning while crushing the descents Now in its third generation the new Trek Powerfly LT 9 has one of the neatest battery concealing solutions we’ve seen to date. Not only is its drive-side loading internal battery a breeze to use, it means the down tube on the latest Powerfly LT doesn’t need to be disproportionally large to contain the battery, like say, the Shimano equipped BMC Trailfox AMP. Bosch PowerTube battery can be charged on or off the bike Dubbed RIB, short for removable integrated battery, and with the protective cover positioned to one side the battery collects way less dirt too, so you’ll get way less grief for plugging the battery in next to the kettle for a quick charge. It even has a handy integrated carry handle for lugging it around. Best of all, RIB leaves plenty of space for a bottle cage, something that wasn’t possible with the battery position on the previous Powerfly LT. Purion display is Bosch’s most compact In keeping with the pack-less riding experience, tabs under the top tube also let you attach a custom Wolf Tooth B-Rad storage strap so you can have a tube and CO2 canister with you at all times. Other than the new downtube that houses the RIB battery, and the addition of the storage tabs under the top tube, the 2019 Powerfly LT 9 shares the same travel, geometry and attitude as the bike that won our e-bike test last year. Numbers that include a slack 66deg head angle high setting for increased steering stability and a generous size range that stretches from all the way to Times are changing fast in the world of e-bikes though, and the reach numbers on the Trek look dated next to the Vitus E-Sommet that won our recent Enduro E-bike test. The Powerfly LT 9 also has relatively long chain stays, 474mm to be precise. And while these aren’t really on trend and may even upset the balance of the bike on the smaller frame sizes, they are a godsend for taller riders on the and bikes as they help load the front end on flat corners to stop it lifting on the steepest climbs. And boy did we ride some steep climbs on the launch of the Powerfly LT 9 in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, terrain that an elite level XC racer on a sub 20lb hardtail would struggle to conquer. On the Powerfly LT 9 however we winched our way up huge mountains with the assistance of the Bosch CX motor driving the new SRAM NX Eagle 11-50t cassette. Stay seated and the Trek offers seamless power delivery, especially in E-MTB mode that automatically toggles between Turbo, Sport and Tour modes to match your effort. Out of the saddle however the Trek has more pedal induced bob than e-bikes like the Vitus and Canyon equipped with full size chainrings rather than a tiny 15t driver cog. It was on the descents however that the Powerfly LT 9 showed its true colours. Planted and sure footed, it gives you the confidence to release your grip on the powerful 4-pistion Shimano XT brakes and push the reinforced Bontrager XR4 tyres to their very limit. With gravity working its magic the new Trek Powerfly LT 9 is an absolute riot, but at ÂŁ5,200 it’s an expensive way to get your kicks when the Vitus costs ÂŁ3, Details FrameAlpha Platinum aluminium, 150mm ShockRockShox Super Deluxe RT3, REaktiv ForkFox Performance 36 Float GRIP, 160mm travel MotorBosch Performance CX 75Nm 250W BatteryBosch PowerTube 500Wh DisplayBosch Purion WheelsBontrager Powerline Comp 40, Bontrager XR4 Team Issue x tyres DrivetrainSRAM EX1 15t driver cogSRAM X1 chainset 15t cog, SRAM GX Eagle r-mech and single-click shifter BrakesShimano Deore XT M8020, 200mm rotors ComponentsBontrager Line 780mm bar, Bontrager Line 60mm stem, Bontrager Line 150mm dropper, Bontrager Arvada saddle Sizes Weight Contact Size tested high Head angle66° Seat angle BB height350mm Chainstay474mm Front centre777mm Wheelbase1,251mm Top tube634mm Reach453mm pqAc.
